I don't know about you lot, but every so often I'll be thinking about Trek history, and certain things will seem to line up - almost as if it's all part of some grand plan in the collective consciousness of Roddenberry/Berman/Abrams' minds (well, maybe not Abrams). I remember in high school about 14 years ago (yes, I know, I'm old) first figuring out the whole V'Ger is Borg thing, then reading those Shatnerverse novels and feeling super vindicated for figuring out The Great Secret. Now, apparently that has moved from coincidence to theory to semi-canon truth to possibly-actual-canon-truth here in STO.
But there are yet others....
Moving from Star Trek I to Star Trek IV, what if the whale probe is from the Xindi-Aquatics? The spherical death-beam seems similar to what it did in the 22nd century (possibly a result of the Xindi reverse-engineering the technology they obtained from the Sphere Builders). The Aquatics are the only other known aquatic species in canon, and the Xindi star system is relatively close to Earth - close enough to allow a non-warp capable probe to get from one star system to another in a relatively short time. Perhaps the Aquatics had discovered the whales of Earth at some point in the past, or maybe someone has tipped the Aquatics off that a very similar species to themselves is in critical danger as a result of humanity, and the Aquatics sent this probe to investigate. Who knows?
While on the subject of the Sphere Builders... what if they are in fact the Iconians, finally having arrived. In Enterprise, it is said that the UFP will fight a final decisive battle against the Sphere Builders in the 26th century. The Enterprise-J was built specifically to fight them. They are a serious enemy of the Federation in the 26th century, and here we are, in the early 25th century with our transwarp gates, quantum slipstream drives, reverse-engineered Borg starship equipment and antiproton weapons, shaking in our boots about the "demons of air and darkness". What do we know about the Sphere Builders? They are trans-dimensional beings (the Iconians have visited with the Elachi and the Undine - they sound pretty trans-dimensional to me). They have time-travel capability (the Iconians have no known time-travel capability, but the ability to instantly travel from one place to another place in space should theoretically also allow time travel). They can destroy entire planets (the Iconians are considered to be at least equals to the Undine, who can certainly do exactly that, and the Iconians are known and feared by both the Borg and the Dominion). Oh, and the Iconians seem to like building spheres. Spheres that float. And look a lot like the whale probe sphere from above.
And speaking of powerful god-beings, I think this Q that we're dealing with in STO, who we'll be seeing again in a few months in the next Winter Wonderland, is the one and only Squire of Gothos, General Trelane, retired. Our Q2 is the son of Q and Q. His Aunt Kathy is Kathryn Janeway. I'd surmise that Q2 spent some part of his early adolescence tormenting Kirk and company until his parents stepped in to stop him. Q2 caused a bit of a stir very early on within the continuum merely by existing. No two Q had procreated in.. well.. ever (?), so if Trelane is a juvenile Q (and he certainly does act like one), who else could be his parents?
So, that's about all I've got for now. Anyone else?
